My Best With Honour

“My Best with Honour” highlights the stories of 12 individuals of different ages and from different walks of life who have experienced the positive power of scouting.

Henry Chia

Henry Chia was working as a forklift operator in an engineering firm. Working with machinery can be hazardous as workplace accidents can and do happen. For Henry, the day came when he lost control of his forklift, and it tipped over and crushed his left leg. Despite having eight operations, doctors were not able to safe his leg and he experienced temporary blindness. Henry had been scout while in school and during this difficult time in hospital he was about to give up when he had a vision of Lord Baden-Powell visiting him.

The next day, inspired by Lord Baden-Powell, Henry’s will to live returned, as did his vision. He would stay for a few more months in hospital where he continued to be an inspiration to others. Today, Henry walks with a prosthetic leg. Read about Henry’s journey to re-enter the workforce and how he continues to serve and support the scouts in the book, “My Best with Honour” written by Dr William Wan.

“My Best with Honour”, which costs $11.20 excluding GST, is available at the Scout Shop and all major bookstores.

Andrew Chua

Andrew Chua was not a scout as a boy and his first introduction to scouting actually came later in life when he was already a teacher-in-training in his mid-40s. As he was dexterous and outdoorsy, and had a passion for helping the youth, he quickly advanced through the programme and became a scout leader.

Today, Andrew has been involved with the scouts for nearly 60 years and continues to go camping. You can read about some of his most memorable experiences such as falling into in a wild-boar trap and how he used his scouting skills to save himself in the book, “My Best with Honour” written by Dr William Wan.

“My Best with Honour”, which costs $11.20 excluding GST, is available at the Scout Shop and all major bookstores.

Abdullah Tarmugi

As a child Abdullah Tarmugi had friends from different races and even joined the scouts with many of his Chinese friends. Racial harmony is one of the chief tenets of scouting and it is a reminder that everyone is the same on the inside. It also serves to remind members to support one another beyond their own individual selves. “We treat each other as friends, and we do not build friendship on the basis of race, language or religion.”

In the book, “My Best with Honour” written by Dr William Wan, find out how scouting was a major driving force in Abdullah Tarmugi’s life, instilling in him values and a sense of duty to his country and fellow citizens at a very young age. He never imagined himself becoming a politician. However, the lessons and values that scouting gave him eventually steered him to become a Member of Parliament and he would go on to serve the country for 27 years.

Englebert Eagle Alan Ho Soo Seng

At the age of 19 when he was serving National Service, a car struck Englebert Eagle Alan Ho Soo Seng from behind. The accident severed his spine, shattered parts of his body and nearly took his life. He had been a scout while in school and he was reminded of the Scout Promise while in hospital. He still had a duty, and he just couldn’t give up.

In the book, “My Best with Honour” written by Dr William Wan, find out how Alan recovered and although a paraplegic, he continues to live a full, purpose-driven and active life. He even climbed Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asia’s highest peak, while on a specially-designed wheelchair and also took part and won gold medals at the ASEAN Para Games

“My Best with Honour”, which costs $11.20 excluding GST, is available at the Scout Shop and all major bookstores.

Kumaran Rasappan

Raised in a traditional and conservative Indian family, Kumaran was timid, shy and very introverted. Scouting opened his eyes to another world and challenged him to step out of his comfort zone. He was terrified of his first Scout Job Week was when he had to solicit strangers to “employ” him. Over time, scouting helped him to develop self-esteem and resilience and he decided to challenge his fitness and stamina, and climb one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, Mount Kilimanjaro. The scout’s first-aid proficiency tests also made him interested in the medical field, and he would eventually study medicine and become a doctor.

In the book, “My Best with Honour” written by Dr William Wan, you can read how Dr Kumaran took a break from work and at the age of 27 became the first Singaporean to reach the summit of Mount Everest for the purpose of charity. Today, Kumaran and his wife, who is also a doctor, frequently travel to faraway places, providing medical care to those who need it.

Chin Zen Jie

At the age of 9, Joshua Chin Zen Jie became a scout, as he had always been interested in the outdoors. He says that the skills he learned from scouting, both hard skills such as survival skills and soft skills such as leadership skills, have very useful in his life. He obtained the President’s Scout Award, the highest award in the Singapore Scout Association and was also selected as a President Scholar, which is the nation’s most prestigious university undergraduate scholarship.

Find out why he is going to study Environmental Science at university and read how scouting taught Joshua to more courageous, more resourceful and build self-confidence that is both engaging and empowering in the book, “My Best with Honour” written by Dr William Wan.

Stephanie Seow

If you thought that only boys could be scouts, you are wrong. Stephanie Seow is a venture scout who joined the uniformed group when she was in junior college as she was attracted to the various watersports activities that they offered. Although she was physically weak, the activities built her endurance. She would become an assistant patrol leader where she had the chance to attend youth conferences, which educated, inspired and empowered her to take action on social and humanitarian issues such as economic and gender inequality.

In the book, “My Best with Honour” written by Dr William Wan, find out how Stephanie started a humanitarian campaign, raised funds and started a summer camp for poverty stricken Mongolian children.

“My Best with Honour” , which costs $11.20 excluding GST, is available at the Scout Shop and all major bookstores.

Eugene Seow

Eugene Seow was born into a family of scouts, as his father was a teacher and scoutmaster. At the age of 8, Eugene joined the Cub Scouts, where he was always surrounded by positive influences. He shared that at St Andrew’s School, the Cubs, Scouts and Ventures had many joint activities such as camping. The scouts taught and learned from each other and the seniors were good role models for those lacking a father figure in their life. Scouting also groomed him to be a leader and when he was just 14 years old, Eugene was part of a small expedition of ten to scale Gunong Tahan (the highest peak in Peninsular Malaysia), and became the youngest (at the time) to have done so. The following year, he led an expedition of 60 scouts to scale Mount Ophia.

Find out how scouting prepared Eugene Seow for National Service and opened doors during his adult and professional life in the book, “My Best with Honour” written by Dr William Wan.

“My Best with Honour”, which costs $11.20 excluding GST, is available at the Scout Shop and all major bookstores.

Moses Lim

Everyone is unique and we are all different from each other. Unfortunately, children can be very mean and bully those who are different from them or call them names. The young Moses Lim was big in size and often subject to ridicule. Despite being fat and unfit, he decided to join the scouts while in primary school. Although some of the physical activities were tough, he was never laughed at. On the contrary, his scout mates always encouraged me and cheered me on. From them, he learned to be empathetic and supportive rather than critical and disparaging.

Scouting gave the talented but socially awkward boy the acceptance, friendships and sense of belonging that he, like the rest of us, so desperately craved. Moses Lim would go on to become a successful actor, comedian and entrepreneur, recognized by many around the region.

Read about how Moses Lim found self confidence and self acceptance from his time as a scout in the book, “My Best with Honour” written by Dr William Wan.

“My Best with Honour”, which costs $11.20 excluding GST, is available at the Scout Shop and all major bookstores.

Professor Leo Tan

Watching Professor Leo Tan lead a tour of the dinosaur fossils at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, which he helped to acquire through fundraising efforts, you would never think he was once a loner and a shy boy.

Raised in a kampung near Mount Faber, young Leo was a keen naturalist but also a shy child who played outdoors by himself. His mom taught him the importance of community, sharing and the kampung spirit, but knew there was a limit to her teaching. She encouraged him to join the scouts where he learned how to confront his uncertainties and overcome his fears. His years in the scouts reinforced his love of the outdoors and he chose to study natural science at the university. Professor Leo Tan would go on to be a respected academic, Chairman of the National Parks Board and Director of the Science Centre as well as hold many other important appointments in public service.

Read his story in the book “My Best with Honour” written by Dr William Wan and see how an awkward solitary boy who played with animals became a well-loved and respected leader, who continues to make his mark in the fields of science, education and conservation.

“My Best with Honour”, which costs $11.20 excluding GST, is available at the Scout Shop and all major bookstores.

Lui Pao Chuen

The young Lui Pao Chuen grew up during the era of British colonialism in Singapore. The hyperactive child was sent to boarding school because his mom thought it would give him a better environment to grow. Boarding school was strict and there were many rules to follow. But, Pao Chuen noticed that the scouts were allowed to leave the school grounds and go on hikes and other outdoor excursions, so he decided to join the scouts.

His focused hyperactivity paid off as he sought to earn as many badges as he could. This also motivated him to try new things, master them and be recognised for them. The scouts gave him a sense of camaraderie and taught him the value of friendships. He would later study at St Joseph’s Institution, where he became the first Queen’s Scout of the 4th Troop. That seemingly impulsive decision to become a scout, he said, “... had the greatest influence on me.”

Today Professor Lui Pao Chuen is retired after spending 41 years at the Ministry of Defence, where his last job was the Chief Defence Scientist.

Find out how scouting helped shaped Professor Lui Pao Chuen’s outlook on life as well as more about his extraordinary career where he worked extensively on weapons testing, ammunition storage facilities and armoured vehicles in the book, “My Best with Honour” written by Dr William Wan.

“My Best with Honour”, which costs $11.20 excluding GST, is available at the Scout Shop and all major bookstores.
